Windak’s Smarter Service approach supporting legacy systems and powering future technology

As automation continues to transform the cable manufacturing industry, Windak is responding with a service strategy that bridges the gap between legacy systems and next-generation technology. From targeted upgrades to intelligent diagnostics, Windak’s modern service solutions are engineered to support cable producers at every stage of their cable packaging automation journey.

Smarter support for today’s needs

“Modern equipment is faster, more precise, and easier to integrate—but we know that many manufacturers still rely on older systems that continue to perform,” says Indrek Sopp, Service and Spare Parts Manager at Windak OÜ, Estonia. “Our job is to ensure that no matter where you are on the modernization curve, we help you move forward.”

Windak’s service offering covers both new and legacy equipment, with tailored solutions that deliver measurable performance and reliability improvements.

Legacy Upgrades: real-life impact

Windak’s engineers have helped customers extend the life and improve the efficiency of aging machines with upgrades to outdated HMIs, servo drives, PLCs, and control panels.

In one recent project in the Netherlands, a customer was operating a 20-year-old line with a desktop-based HMI. Windak replaced it with a new Siemens interface, giving the system a modern, future-ready upgrade.

Another project in Hungary saw Windak fully refurbish an outdated OW Payoff unit and integrate it with the new AR24 Spooler—creating a cohesive, modernized line that continues to deliver.

Every modernization begins with a detailed on-site evaluation. The Windak team documents all key components, creates full system backups, and provides recommendations based on performance goals and ROI analysis.

New machines, integrated with tomorrow’s tools

New equipment brings clear advantages — greater speed, precision, and seamless integration into cable packaging lines. Windak continues to focus on maximizing the performance of new machines while supporting customers with a mix of both modern and legacy systems.

One example is the SIMATIC IOT2050 device, currently in the trial phase. Similar to a black box in aviation, it continuously collects essential machine data — such as log files, axis speeds, positions, and overall status. This real-time information helps the service team detect issues early and respond before small problems escalate.

The solution works with both Siemens and Rockwell platforms, making it adaptable to various setups. As development continues, the goal is to provide improved diagnostics and reduced downtime across different types of cable packaging operations.

A balanced, long-term approach

Whether upgrading existing equipment or investing in the latest packaging technology, Windak’s service strategy is built around flexibility and customer needs. The goal: to help manufacturers maximize equipment performance, minimize downtime, and extend the lifecycle of their investments.

“As equipment becomes more intelligent, service must evolve too,” Sopp adds. “It’s not just about fixing issues—it’s about giving our customers the tools to run smarter and more reliably.”
